The Model L rifle was developed by the Spanish company CETME (now Santa Barbara SA) as an improvement over the previous CETME C. These CETME rifles, have their roots in the WW2 German MP43/MP44/Stg.45 assault rifle, developed by Mauser. After WW2, some Mauser designers moved to Spain and began working for CETME, where eventually the CETME C was developed, chambered for 7.62mm NATO cartridge. CETME continued development. In the mid 1960’s CETME design engineers began working on a smaller caliber rifle. Development was completed in 1980 when the first prototype Model L appeared using the 5.56mm cartridge. The production of the Assault Rifle Model L began in 1984, and was adopted by the Spanish army.
In 1999, this rifle was replaced in service by the H & K G36E assault rifle.
Like the all the earlier guns the CETME model L is a delayed blowback operated, selective fire assault rifle. The bolt has two parts. There are two rollers in the bolt head, which are used to accelerate the bolt body and to retard the bolt head which maintains the cartridge in the chamber until the firing pressure drops. The chamber walls are grooved to help extraction. The Model L rear sight is a simple flip-up "L" shaped sheet with two openings 200 and 400 meters. The magazine opening is designed to accept M16-type magazines.
Parts must be inspected and tested by a qualified and competent gunsmith or armorer before use in a firearm.
Not all firearm parts are interchangeable; use of surplus parts without proper knowledge could cause a firearm to malfunction and cause property damage, injury or death.
