These CETME rifles have their roots in the WW2 German MP43/MP44/Stg.45 assault rifle, developed by Mauser. After WW2, some Mauser designers moved to Spain and began working for CETME, where eventually the CETME C was developed, chambered for 7.62mm NATO cartridge. CETME continued development, to include a version that was tested by the German Army to replace the G1 FAL. H&K was licensed to produce the final version and it was named the H&K G-3.
